We are delighted to share that Phase 1 of an ambitious project to replace the entire lighting system throughout the Sheldonian Theatre is now complete, with the auditorium receiving a state-of-the-art lighting upgrade. This brand-new LED lighting is 90% more energy efficient than the previous lighting and has increased the lux levels within the space by 5567% (yes, really!), providing a safer and better experience for building users, event customers and audience members alike.
The built-in theatrical functionality also allows the Oxford University Event Venues team to offer event organisers an exciting new level of quality and customisation - including personalised lighting design for each event, dramatic spotlights, and colourful washes and animations, all easily implemented from an iPad app. The project was initiated in March 2024, when it was identified that the lighting was obsolete; it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain adequate lux levels and FM was continually requesting repairs to existing lighting.
The project has been managed completely in-house, with collaboration across the Estates Services Department over a ten-month period, from the initial scope of work and planning permission, to the design, tendering, installation, commissioning and training processes. Future phases: the Project Team is now working on lighting replacement in the back-of-house areas in the Sheldonian and working on future lighting improvements for the gallery, circulation areas and cupola. We look forward to reporting on the next phase!
