Writing Fantasy: George. R. R. Martin in Conversation at the Sheldonian Theatre

When you think of fantasy literature, what springs to mind? 

You might be transported to thrilling worlds where flying is possible, animals can talk, and dragons exist. These worlds are meticulously created by beloved authors such as George R.R. Martin, and, on 2 August 2024, this is exactly who we welcomed to a sold-out audience at the Sheldonian Theatre.

OUEV were proud to work in collaboration with Oxford Writer's House to present 'Writing Fantasy', a talk by the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' (Game of Thrones) author about his work. Interviewed by Professor Carolyne Larrington, a medieval scholar inspired by Game of Thrones, Martin answered questions submitted by eager fans who had travelled from far and wide to attend this rare ‘in person’ opportunity with the legendary author.

The Sheldonian Theatre was the perfect setting for this truly magical event. As it was Martin's first time visiting Oxford, the organisers at Oxford Writers House decided a quintessential Oxford experience was required and what better choice than the Sheldonian as the host venue! Built in 1669, with its ornate architecture and stunning painted ceiling, the venue itself wouldn’t be out of place in a fantasy novel!
