Case Study – Oxford Tango Festival 2017

posted on Thursday 23 March

The Oxford Tango Festival held their Gala show at the Sheldonian Theatre. This was the first time the festival organisers had enjoyed the opulent backdrop of the Theatre for their opening night performance which celebrated the power and glamor of this wonderfully sensual dance. Stars from Argentina performed alongside local students and music was provided by the Tango Siempre orchestra.

Objectives and aims

The organisers were keen to create an impact for the opening night of their week long Oxford Tango Dance festival. It was important that a large number of guests could be seated with them easily seeing the dancers from all angles.

Solutions

Subtly lit with plenty of views onto the main performance area, the Theatre was able to create an atmospheric backdrop for this spectacular event. Not having a fixed stage meant we were able to provide plenty of space for the dancers to move around which showed off their sleek dance lines. As the Theatre does not have a backstage area or wings for performers to wait in, the Oxford Tango Festival dancers glided into the theatre through the east and west entrances. Overall the space was ideally suited to this beautiful passionate dance.
